Braces or Orthodontics is the movement of your teeth using clear or metal brackets in order to provide a healthier and more aesthetic relationship of your teeth.
Teeth that are crooked and misaligned not only are unpleasant looking they can be damaging to the teeth and surrounding tissues over time. Teeth that are crowded and rotated can cause hard to clean areas that can lead to gingivitis and periodontitis over time. Also, teeth that do not meet correctly due to crowding, underbites or overbites, can cause unnatural wear or chipping of the teeth.
During treatment brackets are fixed to the teeth with adhesive. They can not be removed by the patient, the patient is required to see the dentist periodically to have adjustments made to the braces. Brushing and flossing may be difficult around braces leading to food and bacteria accumulation. Good oral hygiene is critical with braces. Braces are usually the best choice for children under the age 16 and adults that have compliance issues using clear aligners.
During exams and cleanings your dentist will evaluate your bite and teeth and tell you if braces will benefit your overall dental health.
